The Five Witnesses (4) – The Scriptures

You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

I do not receive honor from men. But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? (John 5: 39-44)

Jesus was blunt about the Jews’ disregard for the Scriptures, meaning then the Old Testament. He told them they had rejected God and did not honor Him; and they would listen to just about anyone but God’s Anointed One: Jesus.

The fact that Jesus came openly in the name of God, as predicted in the OT, finds the Scriptures here mentioned as the fourth witness to who He was and to His teaching. The Scriptures all point to Jesus and to God. It had to make the Jewish leaders hopping mad when He said that last sentence: “How can you believe those who receive honor from one another and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God?

Do you suppose that religious leaders are different today? Do you think that they have not rejected both the scriptures and Christ, just as these?

Turn on your TV on a Sunday morning, before you go to assembly, and see if you can find a televangelist who is not seeking after his own. You’ll be looking for a while. Count the multi-thousand dollar custom suits, the Elvis style jackets, and the hundred thousand dollar productions. If you listen to them, will you hear any two of them teach the same things? And you won’t hear but a smattering of Scriptures given between the whole bunch.

Watch a faith healer, any faith healer. You know them – the guys who smack the simple on the forehead in a vain attempt to look like they can do something which they cannot, often nearly knocking the poor sap over. Jesus and the apostles never healed anyone that way. You won’t find any of that in the Scriptures front to back. If the poor supplicant wasn’t already addled enough when they got to the stage, they are when the pretender is done with them. Listen to what they say. Nearly every one of them praises themselves prior to offering any praise to God. I wonder why that is?

Then again, look though you may, you’ll never find a true healer anywhere. They are everyone scam artists. It’s about the money and the prestige. Con men seek their own too – it has nothing at all to do with God or his Word. Read and see for yourself.

You do know that you can’t find a single denomination named in the Scriptures. That’s simply because they are not listed there; and you can’t find what they teach and do there either. So, how can they be teaching and seeking Christ? They all seek something on their own, and do not honor God or His Word. They have rejected the Scriptures and God. Many are little better than social clubs with Hell as the end product. And who lives in the big house in the cloistered community? Why it’s Pastor, Father or Reverend so-and-so.

Did you know that the word “reverend” appears only once in the KJV, where it refers to God Almighty? “Holy and reverend is His name.” Pastor is the Latin word for shepherd and in its single out-of-place occurrence where it does not refer to actual shepherds in a field (also coming to us from the KJV) it refers to assembly overseers – not to some preacher in a robe up high on a stage with a Super Trouper theater light shining on his face.

What do the Scriptures say? And who do you honor?

The one who rejects Me and doesn’t accept My sayings has this as his judge. The words I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

(John 12:48)
