There is something about this verse that I have never noticed before:
In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel. (1 Corinthians 9:14; ESV)
The thing I missed was “the Lord commanded.” The Lord commands that those who proclaim the gospel receive their living by the gospel. God commands it. How was there ever a belief in the past that preachers ought not to be paid for doing the work? Somewhat shocking, considering the straightforward nature of this verse.
Further, the impact goes deeper when we consider the context. Paul’s point to the Corinthians was that he had the RIGHT to be paid while he labored with the Corinthians but chose to forfeit that RIGHT in an effort to reach the Corinthians with the gospel. Paul “robbed” the churches of Macedonia instead.
There are many scriptures that show that those who proclaim the gospel should be paid. 1 Corinthians 9:14 reveals that this is not a suggestion with God. Pay the proclaimers of the gospel with the generosity of a Christian heart.
