Born Blind (4)

This is the last entry in the series concerning the events recorded in the ninth chapter of the Gospel of John. From John 9 verse 13 onward is the record of how some of the people dealt with this notable occurrence, a work of a type clearly not performed by any man on earth, this remarkable miracle and sign from God. Some of the neighbors took the healed man to the Pharisees. This is where a set of denials of…

Sinners in the hands of God (2)

There is laid in humanity a vision of the torments of Gahenna because they will not hear God's word - the gospel of Christ . The principles of the gospel are active and powerful, they have not faded - they have not been lost in some shuffle of time. They are not in recession, they are not some myth; and if it were not for the restraining hand of God through his word and his patience the minions of hell…

Sinners in the hands of God (1)

Vengeance is Mine, and recompense; their foot shall slip in due time; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things to come hasten upon them. ( Deuteronomy 32:35) In this verse the vengeance of God is threatened on the Israelites, who were at the time Gods people, and who lived under the grace of God; but who, in spite of all of Gods wonderful works remained contrary (as verse 28 notes), having no real understanding of…

Born Blind (3)

This is the third part of the essay concerning the healing of the man born blind as recorded in John 9. Continuing on with our examination of John 9 we are now witness to a denial of truth, a denial of both the events and of the testimony of the man himself, and also that of the witnesses to the events. These things werent done secretly and there were (apparently) several witnesses to the healing who made up of a…

Storm victims praise churches Louisiana residents gave churches higher marks than government agencies in responding to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and most prefer that the federal government control rebuilding funds rather than local officials, according to a Louisiana State University study. On a scale of one (not effective) to 10 (very effective), residents gave churches the highest mark of 8.1, and New Orleans city agencies and state agencies received the lowest rating of 4.6. --by Audrey Hudson, from her article…

Born Blind (2)

This is the second in a series of essays on the healing recorded in John nine. In the New King James and the King James Version, John 9: 4 reads: "I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work." In the New International and all of the American Standard versions it reads: "We must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day:…

Putting On The Show

I find the vocal characterizations and stage presence of our modern day televangelists fascinating. It is almost as if they had all attended one or both of two "schools" in preparation for their chosen calling. The first supposed school must have instructed in the use of exaggerated mannerisms and pitched vocal histrionics, to be used with just a smattering of scripture and a lot of "feel good." There are many disciples of this style in evidence on any Sunday morning…
