The Da Vinci Code: Sorting Fact From Fiction (5)

JEHOVAH The Da Vinci Code certainly plays upon the ignorance of the common reader in many of the charges laid against Christianity. One charge that I found particularly ridiculous is below: “The Jewish tetragrammaton YHWH--the sacred name of God--is in fact derived from Jehovah, an androgynous physical union between the masculine Jah and the pre-Hebraic name for Eve, Havah.” (309) This charge sounds very appealing if one is unwilling to lift a finger and double check Dan Brown’s “research.” Pick…

The Conversion of the Samaritans and a Magician

"But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously practiced sorcery in the city and astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great…" The second of the detailed conversions listed in order in the book of Acts is found in the eighth chapter (verses 1 through 25). It is the record of the conversion of first the people of Samaria and in particular, a man whose name is recorded only as Simon with no surname, and…

THE COUNCIL OF NICAEA The Da Vinci Code is not the first book to make more out of The Council of Nicaea than what actually took place. Many charges are made about what took place in 325 A.D. at this council. Consider what The Da Vinci Code says took place at the Council of Nicaea: “At this gathering many aspects of Christianity were debated and voted upon--the date of Easter, the role of the bishops, the administration of sacraments, and,…

The Conversions On The First Pentecost Following the Resurrection of Jesus

The second chapter of the book of The Acts of Apostles in the New Testament includes a number of firsts. It includes the first recorded sermon, which was delivered by Peter. It was the first listed teaching effort following Jesus’ death. It was an impressive response for a first effort where some three thousand men were converted in a single day. That number seems really large to me, but there may have been half a million (or more) religious men…

Churches prepare to rebut 'DaVinci' Area churches are preparing to counter unorthodox claims about Jesus Christ in the movie "The Da Vinci Code," which opens in theaters later this month. Maniscalco, a spokesman for the District-based U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. "If people see [the movie], they…

There are nine detailed examples of conversions listed in the New Testament. Along with the nine are some less detailed examples and also a mass of independent information in the letters of Peter, Paul and the rest of the writers. THE PRIORY OF SION Not everything the Da Vinci Code claims has biblical importance. If one can show that the non-biblical claims of the book are inaccurate, then the foundation can be laid that one should not accept the claims against Jesus and the Bible without a thorough investigation. The first paragraph of the first page of the Da Vinci Code reads: “FACT: The Priory of Sion-- a European secret society founded in 1099-- is a real organization. In 1975…
