Sinners in the hands of God (3)

Do you know that God has laid himself under no obligation to keep anybody out of hell for even one moment? God certainly has made no promises either of eternal life or of any deliverance or preservation from eternal death, but only what is contained in the covenant of grace, and in the promises that are given in Christ, in whom all the promises are; and that his offer requires our individual response and then to his stated terms. Outside…

Sinners in the hands of God (2)

There is laid in humanity a vision of the torments of Gahenna because they will not hear God's word - the gospel of Christ . The principles of the gospel are active and powerful, they have not faded - they have not been lost in some shuffle of time. They are not in recession, they are not some myth; and if it were not for the restraining hand of God through his word and his patience the minions of hell…

Sinners in the hands of God (1)

"Vengeance is Mine, and recompense; their foot shall slip in due time; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things to come hasten upon them." ( Deuteronomy 32:35) In this verse the vengeance of God is threatened on the Israelites, who were at the time Gods people, and who lived under the grace of God; but who, in spite of all of Gods wonderful works remained contrary (as verse 28 notes), having no real understanding of…

Putting On The Show

I find the vocal characterizations and stage presence of our modern day televangelists fascinating. It is almost as if they had all attended one or both of two "schools" in preparation for their chosen calling. The first supposed school must have instructed in the use of exaggerated mannerisms and pitched vocal histrionics, to be used with just a smattering of scripture and a lot of "feel good." There are many disciples of this style in evidence on any Sunday morning…

Some More Essentials and Non-essentials

"For Moses truly said to the fathers, "The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you. And it shall come to pass that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people." (Acts 3: 22 , 23) "Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven…

Attempts To Explain the Empty Tomb (3)

Some scholars declare that the disciples went to the wrong tomb. Thus, Jesus' tomb was never empty and Jesus did not really raise from the dead. When the disciples went to the wrong tomb and found it empty, they assumed a resurrection but were mistaken. I would hope that this theory quickly goes against the reader's logical reasoning process. Two problems ought to be readily apparent to us. First, do we really want to accept a theory which states that…

Attempts to Explain the Empty Tomb (2)

Stolen Body Theory Since the swoon theory is not possible, some have suggested that the disciples stole the body. This theory supposes that the disciples formed a conspiracy to steal the body and fabricate a story that Jesus rose from the dead. Is this theory viable? As the disciples would come to the tomb to pull off this conspiracy, they would have encountered the Roman soldiers guarding the tomb. Some how, some way, these fairly uneducated and untrained fishermen would…

Attempts to Explain the Empty Tomb (1)

Christianity makes it claim upon the resurrection of Jesus. Paul argues the centrality of the resurrection of Jesus to our faith. If Jesus did not raise from the dead, then our faith is useless and vain. But if Jesus did raise from the dead, then the other claims of Jesus are true. Jesus is the Son of God and we must worship Him if the resurrection is true. Historically we know that the tomb of Jesus was empty. The tomb…

When The Easter Bunny Comes Early

Perhaps some of the readers noticed that Easter came fairly early this year. Many of us have been used to Easter falling either at the end of March or at the beginning or middle of April. But what you may not have noticed this year is that the Passover is four full week AFTER the celebration of Easter. Does anyone find this surprising? Does anyone find this troubling? The last time I read my Bible it declared that Jesus was…
